Pistol Permit Services

ACCESS TO PISTOL PERMIT RECORDS

An individual's pistol permit record is available to be viewed in the County Clerk's Office only by the permit holder. This may be done in person at the County Clerk's Office. If you do not wish to share your pistol permit information with the public, please fill out the NYS Firearms License Request for Public Records Exemption (PDF) and file it with our office.

TRANSFERRING YOUR PISTOL PERMIT TO MONTGOMERY COUNTY

To transfer your Pistol Permit to Montgomery County, you must contact the Pistol Permit Department of the county where your permit is currently held. There is a $5.00 fee to complete the transfer process. This fee must accompany your file when it is mailed to us. Accepted forms of payment include check or money order, however, cash is also accepted but not preferred due to it being mailed through USPS. Checks should be made payable to Montgomery County Clerk and state your current address and phone number so we may contact you once it is received to set up an appointment to obtain your Montgomery County Pistol Permit.

TRANSFERRING YOUR PISTOL PERMIT TO ANOTHER COUNTY

If you have moved out of Montgomery County, and wish to transfer your records to the County you now reside in (please verify with your current County to see if you HAVE to transfer. Some allow you to keep the file here), you must notify us of your new address within 10 days. If you are transferring the record, you will need to fill out the Request to Transfer Pistol Permit Form (PDF) and submit it at the time you change your address.

NY SAFE ACT RECERTIFICATION

New York State firearms law now has certain requirements for pistol permit holders. The County Clerk's Office does not handle this recertification process. Please go on the NYS Police website* OR the NYS Safe Act website* for complete information. You may also call 1-855-LAW-GUNS with any further questions.
