Important Assessment Dates for City of Amsterdam

  • Valuation Date –December 1st
    • Valuation Date is the date upon which the value of your property is based
  • Taxable Status Date – December 1st
    • All exemptions must be to the assessor by this date.
    • Property condition and owner as of this date are assessed according to the value determined on the Valuation Date.
  • Tentative Roll Date – January 1st
    • The assessor completes, certifies and files an assessment roll containing the assessed values for each property.
  • Change of Assessment Notices – January – 10 prior to grievance day.
    • Notices are sent to all property owners who have had an increase in assessment on the assessment roll. (Some assessors will send notices to those assessments which have decreased as well).
  • Public Inspection of the Tentative Roll – January 1st until the Third Tuesday in January.
    • This is the period of time in which the property owner(s) may examine the assessed values and exemptions on the tentative roll and discuss any issues with the assessor(s).
  • Grievance Day – The Third Tuesday in January
    • The Board of Assessment Review meets to hear assessment complaints. It is also the last day that a property owner(s) may file a formal complaint seeking reduction in their tentative assessments. For the time of the grievance hearings, please contact your assessor(s).
  • Final Roll Date – March 1st
    • The assessor completes, certifies and files an assessment roll containing the assessed values for each property.
  • Small Claims Assessment Review: March 31st
    • The last date by which an owner of a one, two or three family residence may apply for small claims assessment review of the Board of Assessment Review determination. This is 30 days after the date the final assessment roll is filed. To file for Small Claims, you must have gone to the Board of Assessment Review and filed a grievance.
  • Filing of Article 7 Certiorari: March 31st
    • A legal action pursuant to Article 7 of the Real Property Tax Law challenging an assessment must be filed in State Supreme Court no later than 30 days after the date the final assessment roll is filed. To file for Small Claims, you must have gone to the Board of Assessment Review and filed a grievance.
  • City Tax Roll – July 1st
    • City Tax bills are sent out on July 1st and are based on the Final Assessment Roll filed by the assessor.
  • Greater Amsterdam School District Tax Bills – July 1st
    • Greater Amsterdam School District Tax bills are sent out on July 1st and are based on the Final Assessment Roll filed by the assessor.
  • County Tax Bills – January 1st
    • County tax bills are sent out on January 1st and are based on the Final Assessment Roll filed by the assessor.
