Inspection Results Of Culvert Necessitate Road Closure Is In Best Interest Of Public
FONDA - On Friday morning, the Montgomery County Department of Public Works is closing a portion of Miami Avenue in the Town of Amsterdam until further notice. The street will be closed from Tessiero Square to Amsterdam High School. The road will be closed sometime between 8-9 a.m., on Friday morning.
One lane of Miami Avenue had been closed to traffic due to this partial collapse and the county had initiated plans to replace the culvert that is located underneath the roadway. Due to the continued deterioration of the road, the Department of Public Works requested that AECOM send an engineer to perform an on-site inspection. The inspection showed that the far edge of the westbound travel lane has partially collapsed due to signs of distress to the culvert under the road and that portion of the street should be closed to prevent any further collapse.
"Based on this recommendation, we have no choice but to close the road until further notice," County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort said. "We simply can't risk putting people and property in harm's way. We will do our best to get this street open as soon as possible."
