More Than 3,800 Pounds, 2,100 Gallons Of Product Collected By County On June 20
FONDA - County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort announced on Wednesday what was collected during the county's first Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Back on June 20, Montgomery County held a collection day for hazardous items that should not be disposed in the trash. More than 3,800 pounds and 2,100 gallons of hazardous products were collected by the county and now will either be neutralized and recycled into new product or safely and properly disposed.
"It is great that the county was able to step up and provide this service to gather these potentially harmful products and dispose of them safely and in a proper manner," Ossenfort said. "This is an event that will help keep residents safe and provides them an opportunity to dispose of products that aren't being used around the house."
More than 140 people from the public participated in the event, which was run, in coordination with the county's Department of Public Works, Treasurer's Office and Emergency Management. The event was partially funded by a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Below is a sample of what was collected:
Household hazardous products include oil based paints and cleaners that contain potentially harmful ingredients and need to be disposed of carefully, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). To properly discard these products call a private disposal company or utilize an event like this one.
