County Legislator Alex Kuchis Stepping Down From District 9 Post

FONDA - County Legislator Alex Kuchis has informed the Office of the Legislature and Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort that he will resign at the end of the month. Kuchis is stepping down because he has accepted a job at a firm which provides audit services to Montgomery County, creating a potential conflict of interest. Kuchis represents District 9, the eastern most part of the county.

"While I regret to resign," Kuchis wrote in his letter, "I must put the needs of my family ahead of the fulfilling role I held with the County. It was truly a pleasure working with (Clerk of the Legislature) Cheryl (Reese) and the other legislators, and all will be sorely missed. I wish them continued success and accomplishment for the remainder of their terms. I hope they keep working together for the betterment of Montgomery County."

The process of who will replace Kuchis is underway. According to the County Charter, the County Legislature shall appoint a qualified elector of the district in which the vacancy occurred, to serve until a successor has been elected and qualified.

"I wish Alex well in his new challenge, but will miss working with him at the county level," Ossenfort said. "He brought a lot of positive ideas with him and served the county well."

Previous to serving on Montgomery County's first legislative body, Kuchis was a member of the Amsterdam town board. His background and strong fiscal management skills made him an extremely useful resource for budget and finance issues facing the county.

"It was great to work alongside Alex, as colleagues, for nine months," said Legislative Chairman Thomas L. Quackenbush. "I think I can speak for the rest of the legislature in saying that he will certainly be missed."

Earlier this week, Kuchis, with fellow legislator Martin Kelly and County Treasurer Shawn Bowerman, opened bids and discussed the selection of a new auditing firm for the county. His last official duty will be at the legislature's full board meeting, on Sept. 30.
