Volunteering for your Fire Department

Volunteering for your local fire department as a firefighter or EMT will be one of the most rewarding, and enjoyable things you can do. Being a volunteer will enrich your life and allow you to give back to your community.

There are plenty of jobs that do not involve being a firefighter or EMT. Most fire departments need people interested in administrative positions. Fund raisers and community events always need support.

Through your department you can get training that can help you persue a firefighting career, and give you a taste of what firefighting is all about.

A volunteer fire department provides a family atmosphere and a social community.

Basic Requirements

There's no need to have prior experience in firefighting or EMS. You don't need to have the body of a weight lifter and it won't use up all your free time. There are plenty of jobs on any department and everyone can fit in.

To be a firefighter most departments require you to be at least 18 years of age. Some departments also run a junior firefighter program.

No previous training is required. Training will be provided by both your department and outside sources.

You will need to complete an application and background check which usually takes about a month. You will be expected to complete a physical, generally paid for by your department.

How to join

Your help, in whatever capacity, will be greatly appreciated by your fire department. You will find that they will be eager to meet you and you will be on your way to joining a special fraternity.

To join, or volunteer for, your department, select your community or department from the list of departments on the website menu. There you will find where the department is and when they meet. If your department isn't listed you may contact the Fire Coordinator's Office at 518-853-4011 for help.

To join or volunteer for your Fire Department, in an emergency or non-emergency role, anywhere in New York State, see the Fire in You web site.
