FONDA - County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort, Montgomery County Emergency Management/Services Director Jeffery T. Smith and Fire Coordinator Dale Furman wish to advise all county residents of the dangers of open burning during this time of year.
The New York State burn ban does not take effect until March 16, however, the county has experienced a few grass/brush fires over the last few days, causing damage to acres of land and a minor injury to one individual.
The region is experiencing abnormally early spring like conditions, with dry vegetation on top of the ground and spring wind conditions. These factors can cause a small grass/brush fire to burn out of control very quickly.
County officials encourage all residents to NOT perform any open burning and to use extreme caution until the state burn ban takes effect. Should the area continue to experience problems, the county is considering its own burn ban, in an attempt to protect life, property and provide additional support to our first responders.
