RESOLUTION ALLOWING THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE TO ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH MARIST COLLEGE (PERSONNEL)

WHEREAS, The Personnel Officer recommends that the County Executive Enter into an agreement with Marist College who is offering reduced tuition for select graduate and adult undergraduate programs to all full-time and part-time employees and volunteers of Montgomery County; and
WHEREAS, Marist College is offering a fifty percent (50%) discount on tuition on the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree for county employees. In addition, a twenty-five percent (25%) discount will be granted to employees/volunteers pursuing full-time or part-time graduate or adult undergraduate studies online or on campus, and this same discount with the same terms and conditions will be extended to the employees/volunteers immediate adult family members; and
WHEREAS, The Personnel Officer and Marist College, believe a partnership will help improve and expand the reach of Montgomery Counties current education benefits plan and assist its workforce in reaching their higher education goals thus creating greater opportunities within the county for them; and
WHEREAS, Marist does not charge any fees for this service and would only help communicate the partnership opportunity to our employees and volunteers in return; and
RESOLVED, the Montgomery County Legislature authorizes the County Executive to enter into said agreement upon review and approval of the County Attorney.

I. Nature of Request:
Marist College is offering a discount to Montgomery County Employees. This discount in higher education provides an opportunity for our employees to further their education and expand their employment opportunities within Montgomery County.
II. Justification:
Retention of employees has been a matter of concern for Montgomery County. Montgomery County values its workforce and would like to provide employees with educational opportunities that may provide increased opportunities for career growth.
III. Legislative Impact:
Authorized pursuant to Article 3 of the Montgomery County Charter.
IV. Financial Impact:
No Financial Impact. Cost savings to employees and their eligible dependents for higher education.
