 Fraud Unit

The Fraud Unit investigates all allegations of welfare fraud. Allegations are received in a number of avenues including the DSS staff, the public as well as local police and employers. Cases are pursued both criminally and through court proceedings.

The Fraud Unit has the responsibility for case preparation and presents all legal documentation, supporting documentation and case overpayments to the District Attorney’s office for final review.

 Reporting Welfare Fraud

If you suspect, or have knowledge of a social services client fraudulently receiving assistance from Public Assistance, Food Stamps or Home Energy Assistance (HEAP), you should report it to the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

Some examples of situations that could be fraudulent are:

  • Unreported Income (either earned or unearned)
  • Hidden Assets (bank accounts, property, etc.)
  • Unreported changes in Household Composition (either someone moved into the home or moved out)
  • Unreported changes in Shelter Costs
  • False Parental Custody
  • Food Stamp Trafficking (Allowing use of or selling EBT cards to others)

To report potential Welfare Fraud complete the Report Welfare Fraud Online Form. Once the form is completed, you will have the option to submit electronically or print and mail or fax to the address indicated on the form.

 Resource Recovery Unit

The Resource Recovery Unit is responsible for the recovery of available funds from client resources such as property liens (Mortgage or Medicaid real property liens), recovery from personal injury settlements (SSL 104B liens) collection of Medicaid recoveries from claims against estates and the collection of funds from nursing home personal needs accounts. The unit also includes Third Party Health insurance that helps assure Medicaid/Medicaid Managed Care is payer of last resort.
