Annual Training For Planning Board
and Zoning Board of Appeals

2 Hour Training Session at FMCC- June 17, 2010- 6 to 8 p.m.

BOARD TRAINING REQUIRED

All County and Local Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals members must receive 4 hours of relevant planning training per year. The Department of State link below provides additional information on this.

BOARD TRAINING LAW

See http://www.dos.state.ny.us/lgss/mandatorytraining.htm for rules and procedures on New York State Law Chapter 662, which requires a minimum number of training hours for Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals.

DOS ON-LINE TRAINING

The Department of State now offers two (2), two-hour credit training courses for local board members.

In an email to the County Planning Office, Mr. Burke, NYS DOS stated,

“For planning and zoning board members who want to sign up for the online tutorials, please have the individuals send me the below information and I will register them and send them a user name and password”.

Here are DIRECTIONS to take DOS’s new on-line training course,

Planning Board Overview.

• Register to Take Course. You’ll need to contact: Contact Philip Burke, of the DOS at: Philip.Burke@dos.state.ny.us. or call him at (518) 474-2557 and provide him with the following:
  Name
  Email Address
  Phone number
  County
  Municipality where they hold board position and name of board
  Position
  
• Phillip will send you a username and password. Then log on at: http://www.oft.state.ny.us/apps/eLearning/welcome.cfm
  Select “I want to take a course on eLearnNY.”
  Then select “NYS DOS Local Government Courses” from the drop down menu.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY PLANNING OFFICE TRAINING FOR LOCAL BOARD MEMBERS

Over the last 2 years, the County Planning Office has organized training opportunities for local Planning and ZBA members. The New York Department of State provided trainers and materials for these training sessions. The state has cut back on free training due to state budget constraints. This year, the County Planning Staff will be providing 2 different training sessions, the first on June 11, in Fort Plain and the second in late summer in the Amsterdam area. Each training session will provide 2 hours of training. If someone can’t attend these 4 hours of training, you can pick up 2 additional hours of training using the New York Department of State On-Line training.
