FUTURE OF FARMING IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY DISCUSSED

Approximately 40 people attended a workshop where the Future of Farming in Montgomery County was discussed. The workshop topics included Conservation Easements, 2009 Farmland Protection Implementation Grant applications and a discussion on the overall future of agriculture. The event was held on Tuesday, March 17th at 1:30 p.m. at the Old County Courthouse in Fonda. Jill Knapp, Executive Director of the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy (MHLC) will started the workshop by explaining what a Conservation Easement is and the benefits they can provide to landowners. Next, Randy Siver, Assistant Planner for the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development and Planning explained the New York State Farmland Protection Implementation (FPIC) Grant program. A pre-application form for this year’s FPIG will be available at the meeting and on-line at: http://www.co.montgomery.ny.us/Planning/Farming/PDRPreappForm2009.pdf

Mr. Greene and Assistant Planner Randy Siver will also be available to help farmers with their applications after the workshop. In addition to the discussion on Conservation Easements and the FPIG grant program, the future of agriculture and farming was discussed. “We’re wanted to hear directly from the farmers themselves on the status of farming, the problems they’re having and any ideas on what might be done to help keep farming viable and an important part of Montgomery County”, Mr. Greene said.
