Montgomery County Agricultural Protection Plan Update
Montgomery County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan Update Montgomery County currently has an adopted Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan and January 14th, 2010 marked the plan's 10-year anniversary. The Montgomery County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board will be working with the Planning Staff to seek grant funding to help update the plan. Chairwoman Elma Phillips said, "There are a number of recommendations from the 1999 plan that still need to be implemented and we see the update as a great opportunity to seek input on ways to make agricultural profitable and keep it as a way of life." Some of the recommendations from the 1999 plan include Agricultural Assessments, Right to Farming Laws, Marketing and Incentives to Farming, the High Cost of Insurance, Cluster Zoning and Comprehensive Planning and the Purchase and/or Transfer of Development Rights Programs. Mr. Greene hopes that the update process will lead to new ideas; innovative programs and better ways to implement farmland protection strategies and strengthen farm markets.
